BRIEF Review

gloria by kerry young

Second only to Young's debut novel, Pao, Gloria is a work of art in terms of character development. Young's story follows Gloria Campbell from the depths of the jamaican outback, to the writhing heart of Trenchtown as it fights for survival. With the threat of communist revolution, the end of British imperialism and the arrival of American neocolonialism, Gloria falls in love with the godfather of Chinatown, a man who escaped from under the feet of the advancing Japanese army in Guangzhou and fled to Jamaica with his mother and brother. Young is a must read for anyone interested in Caribbean history and the Chinese diaspora.

People think being a whore got to do with what gwaan in the bedroom but it not. Being a whore is about who is in charge.
